Not a one woman show
Nov 5th marks a significant transition to how SLU has been doing large group over the past few years. Two months into the semester, we made an assessment of large group. We found that although new students were regularly checking out large group, we never had more than 10-15 students show up. The freshmen small group in contrast had 28 students one week! What does this mean Lord??? After some prayer and a conversation with my senior leaders, we felt led to approach the rest of leadership with a proposal for a new type of large group. Rather than meet every week with our 10-15 regulars, we explored the possibility of coordinating a monthly event oriented large group. In order to work, it would be something everyone would need to take ownership of and pour resources into. We would engage topics that connect with a wider audience of students and work hard to address what Jesus' perspective would be in the matter. Amazingly, one conversation with the leadership team and everyone was on board! I guess we were all feeling the need for something to change. We saw what the path to leaving things as is was headed and it wasn't leading to growth of "students transformed, campuses renewed, and world changers developed." So we've shifted course. It's exciting and new and has the potential for greater impact on campus. It's also filled with questions of the unknown and I find myself being stretched in leadership. It all feels risky... but good at the same time. Please pray for us as we lift our hands up to the Lord.
